Fair Winds To The South Seas Discovery of NZ by Brian Millard. On the thirteenth of December 1642, sailors aboard two small ships belonging to the Dutch East India Company sighted land. This was the first reported sighting by Europeans of Aotearoa, New Zealand. The man commanding the expedition was Abel Janszoon Tasman.

Abel Janszoon Tasman was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant, best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644 in the service of the Dutch East India Company. He was the first known European explorer to reach New Zealand and the islands of Fiji and Van Diemen's Land.
