Episode #28 of "Jazz Today" aired on KOMO, Seattle on January 30th, 1958. Host Bill Coben takes listeners through the rise and fall of bebop, and the birth of the cool sound in the 40s.
Audio quality is particularly rough on this episode, as most of the music was sourced from 78's. This was recorded directly from the mixing console onto a 7" reel of Scotch 190, at 7.5 inches per second in full-track mono. A 1970s TEAC A6300 quarter-track stereo deck was used for playback.
Featured tracks include performances by Jay McShann & Charlie Parker, Al Casey and his Sextet, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Miles Davis, and Lenny Tristano, along with Rainier Beer advertisements.
