In this classic novella, the life of a drab office clerk named Golyadkin begins to be haunted by his "doppelgänger," a man identical to him possessing all the charm and charisma Golyadkin lacks. This double shows up over and over again, succeeding in the things Golyadkin has failed to do throughout his life. As this double infiltrates himself more and more into Golyadkin's life, the reader is left wondering who he is and what his purposes might be. - Summary by Magda Wilde (5 hr 57 min)

Reviews

(5 stars)

A strange early Dostoevsky work performed by a talented young reader. Similar to his forerunner Gogol and his descendant Kafka. Listen to get a sense of early artistic experiments that D. refined in his later career, or to witness the utter humiliation of the hapless protagonist.

One of the first cases of identity theft. Book was sure far and beyond what I thought it would be. What with Dostoyevsky endings not always happy, I held my breath to the end. It’s I fine book with a fun reader. Enjoy!
