Malcolm

Malcolm MacPhail has lived, for all of his twenty or so years, in a fishing village on the north coast of Scotland. He lives with his grandfather and, though he has never met his parents, has no curiosity about the details of his birth. However, others in the town have their own curiosity, and their own suspicions, about where this highland man and his infant grandson came from, those twenty or so years ago. When the local marquis and his daughter come to live in their grand estate just outside the town, unoccupied for many years, events begin to move which introduce to them the humble Malcolm, and which may shed some light on Malcolm's past while changing the course of his future. Wonderful book, excellently read!

(5 stars)

Riveting story. Endearing characters. Soul satisfying tale. I wait expectantly for the sequel to be recorded! (Yes, the dialect is not what our modern ears are accustomed to, but this American understood the storyline very well with minimal relistening. Don't be afraid of it, as you will soon be able to understand all foreign words in context and may find you have added a few new - actually old - words to your vocabulary.)

Absolutely Fantastic!

This is my 2nd time reading this book, but my FIRST time listening to the audio. Devorah did a **STELLAR** job reading this captivating story. Immediately on finishing this book I was PRAYING that she had also recorded The Marquis of Lossie! SO VERY excited to see that it is in progress. Devorah and Librivox have my undying gratitude for making this story available through audio. I plan to visit this area of Scotland this summer and will enjoy seeing the same coast Malcom saw, and I know his voice will sound in my mind as Devorah read it!!

My favorite George MacDonald book!

Thank you, Devorah Allen, for putting your whole heart and soul into reading this book and bringing each character to life with your excellent reading! I was blessed once again with this book, and this time I listened instead of read, which was made quite enjoyable with how well it was done. I am looking forward to when the sequel is finished and I can continue with the story.

I'm listening to this the second time. The story is complex but easily followed and the narration is very good. It surprises me that Devorah Allen is reading a book here on Librivox. I'd expect her to be making money with her narration. I do hope she's working on the sequel, as this book leaves us with many loose threads and unanswered questions.

Great story, great narrator

Malcolm is basically a historical novel, with lots of picturesque scenery, Scots dialect, social and religious conflicts, and some of the most memorable characters outside of Dickens. It would make a great serial graphic novel! Anyone? (Also, there is a sequel to Malcolm called "The Marquis of Lossie": would love to hear it on Librivox.)

Yay! What an awesome story! It is so nice to hear a story where faith is presented in all its varieties. Great characters, fun suspenseful plot. MacDonald is new to me. I wish that the sequel were on LibriVox. Very nice reading.

Excellent story & reading

Devorah Allen brings the story alive with perfect timing, distinct voices, and a lovely Scottish dialect. My daughter and I have enjoyed this book thoroughly.
