The Kingdom of God Is Within You

Read by Leo Tolstoy

(3.5 stars; 15 reviews)

When Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace was published in 1869, his genius was immediately recognized by people all over the world. In the later part of Leo Tolstoy's life, however, he began to share his deepest thoughts about Christianity in his writing. His definition of Christianity was not the same as the priests and bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church where there was so much pomp and pageantry. Tolstoy could care less for all that ceremony. He was a radical follower of Jesus Christ's teachings, particularly as found in the Sermon on the Mount (including Christ's controversial admonitions to "resist not evil," to "love your enemies" and to "turn the other cheek.")

This book you are about to hear shares Tolstoy's thoughtful commentary on where TRUE Christianity lies and why and how the Church has gotten Christ's teaching so wrong.

A 20-minute sermon at the beginning

I'll just read the book. I was not prepared for a sermon and/or criticism or commentary. I owned this book in college long ago but I do not remember it. I wanted to hear Constance Garnett's translation fresh and to have it "refresh" my thinking.

Great Reading by Vic Zarley

Never having read Tolstoy, I thought it appropriate to tackle War and Peace but it’s such a huge book I chose Kingdom as my first foray into Tolstoy. Listening to Vic’s reading with each chapter ending with music (Russia, Russia My Love) helped keep my attention on the sometimes hard to follow, deep discussions by Tolstoy. I can understand how this work could influence “non-resistance or non-violence” doctrines adopted by Gandhi and Martin Luther King. I found myself arguing with Tolstoy’s idea of how man could change to make world non-violent though I could agree that should mankind be able to accomplish the heart changes required to truly follow Jesus’s teachings as Tolstoy presents, the world would indeed be at peace. I also appreciated Vic’s commentary.

Please, the book only! Let the reader deduce their own opinions. I painfully finished it but would be willing to give another listen when LibriVox obtains a non-biased reader.

Kingdom of God is Within

The better of the two on Libra Vox. More professional narration but must put up with Vic's commentaries.

every time I listen to it. gets better and better. even with Vic

Hands down the worst book I have listened to of 1,000. Audio is dreadful and the first 3 mins of each chapter is repeated, so that’s 90 minutes that could have been deleted. The narrator sound like he is on drugs too. Don’t wastes your time on this rubbish.
